A. G. HAYES AND ME

Posted by Gary Martine on Saturday, March 14, 2020, In : The Edge of Madness: Shadow
It has been my good fortune to have worked on QUANTUM DEATH (Savant 2019) with the imminent author of thrillers, A. G. Hayes. In this fifth work in the Koski and Falk Secret Agent Series, Susan Koski and her partner Joe Falk take on their most complex and dangerous case yet: The Quantum Death Machine.

Since then A. G. and I have ended up in almost daily conversations about Koski and Falk, and most recently, his developing five-book Kate Keenan Special Assignment series, the first work being F...

TAKING WRITING TO THE EDGE OF MADNESS

Posted by Gary Martine on Friday, August 9, 2019, In : The Edge of Madness: Shadow
It's my special pleasure to announce that Aignos Publishing, an imprint of Savant Books and Publications, has accepted my newest techno-thriller, "The Edge of Madness: Shadow" for publication. Taking up where TOTAL MELTDOWN by Raymond Gaynor and William Maltese (Borgo/Wildside 2009) left off, NewAmerica, now a shadow of the former United States of America, provides a challenging and dangerous future place for three young firebrands to live -- dystopic science fiction that rings all too true i...

QUANTUM DINING

Posted by Gary Martine on Friday, October 20, 2017, In : Quantum Death
ALOHA Everyone! Yes, today's blog is truly about "quantum dining" which, translated, means dining with a copy of QUANTUM DEATH (Savant 2016) by A. G. Hayes with, you guessed it, me, Raymond Gaynor, aka Gary Martine, D. S. Janik and/or Daniel S. Janik. This afternoon, I visited a favorite Vietnamese restaurant that serves delicious Pho, a soup not unlike Japanese Ramen but with a totally different taste.

Yum. While waiting, I displayed my newest book and generated some surprising interest. Fir...

DESPOTS, BREAD AND CIRCUSES

Posted by Raymond Gaynor on Thursday, November 3, 2016, In : Quantum Death

In the past, antagonists in thrillers typically wore black hats and shot everyone, while protagonists wore white (or at least not-black) hats and, when pressured, shot reluctantly back. For many years this demarcation seemed inviolate. Why? The world up to the recent has been one of guns and bullets, where the white hats in one clever way or another stopped the bullets and saved the day.

Today, neither antagonists nor protagonists even wear hats, making them initially indecipherable from each...

WHERE IN THE WORLD...?

Posted by Raymond Gaynor on Thursday, October 27, 2016, In : Quantum Death

The new breed of dictatorial politicians represent more than another adventure for special agents Tripler and Clarke — TOTAL MELTDOWN (Borgo/Wildside 2005) — or Koski and Falk — QUANTUM DEATH (Savant 2016). They represent what's going awry in a world that is increasingly losing its core humanity. In a phrase, that's what's at the very heart of many contemporary thrillers. Not dystopia. Not violence. Not abuse. Not sex, money, power or arrogance. Without what makes humans human -- joy, m...

THRILLERS: PIECE-BY-PIECE OR THE WHOLE MONTY?

Posted by Raymond Gaynor on Saturday, October 1, 2016, In : Quantum Death
Writing a thriller is equal parts conscious and unconscious work. At least, it is for me. And the conscious part, in fact, is often more in retrospect than the writing moment. One of those crossover parts is whether to reveal the plot piece-by-piece or all at once, in either case, relying heavily on invoking the reader's curiosity.

In the classic mystery thriller, the plot is revealed gradually piece-by-piece with the final piece that brings meaning to everything typically withheld to the las...

FIRST AMAZON REVIEW OF QUANTUM DEATH

Posted by Raymond Gaynor on Friday, September 30, 2016, In : Quantum Death
First Amazon review for QUANTUM DEATH (Savant 2016) posted at https://www.amazon.com/dp/0996325530

4/5 Stars - "Quantum Death left me on the edge of my seat beginning to end. I was so afraid for Koski and Falk and for the USA! Quantum physics comes in to play with new technology, and the Cerebus team for the US springs into action to save our country even as it was being destroyed and simultaneously, sold out from under us. Who was cyber attacking us? How? How could we defend ourselves? This...

TIME FOR SOME CELEBRATORY MUSIC AND DANCE

Posted by Raymond Gaynor on Thursday, September 29, 2016, In : Quantum Death
Having successfully begun the launch of QUANTUM DEATH (Savant 2016), I decided it was time to celebrate, and what better way to do so than with music and dance.

The "Fab Four" were visiting Waikiki, and my partner and I decided it was time to meet the Beetles in person (a la live avatars) and re-experience the 60's to present with those iconic musicians, often alluded to as the outstanding musicians of our century. The Fab Four didn't disappoint. It proved more than a stroll down Memory (Penn...

THE "GUTS" OF A THRILLER: THE HUMAN OR INHUMANE?

Posted by Gary Martine on Thursday, September 1, 2016, In : Quantum Death
I'm often asked what I think makes up a good thriller. There are lots of ways of approaching that question, but, to me they all seem to boil down to the human or inhumane? That is, conveying the very essence of being human -- emotions -- or the very essence of being not human -- inhumane? I'd like to start with the latter.

You might think the opposite of humanness would be inhumanness, but that's more the purview of fantasy, namely horror or terror. In the world of thrillers it isn't what's i...

SHOULDN'T ALL THRILLERS HAVE A VILLAIN?

Posted by Gary Martine on Wednesday, August 31, 2016, In : Quantum Death
It's said that powering every thriller is "tension" that typically comes from the existence of a protagonist and antagonist. I was taught this by the best, but I've always wondered if an antagonist-villain was really necessary to power a thriller. One thing about QUANTUM DEATH (Savant 2016) that's different than many other thrillers, is that there is no personification of evil, no antagonist-villain per se. In that sense, perhaps, QUANTUM DEATH is more of a mystery by definition. And yet...

THE OTHER SIDE OF A THRILLER

Posted by Gary Martine on Sunday, August 28, 2016, In : Quantum Death

True, a thriller need be no more than a work that thrills readers -- a sort of wild carnival ride -- spanning every possible genre. I, however, have always felt that action needs a counterpoint in order to keep the action new and exciting. My favorite counterpoint is romance, and QUANTUM DEATH (Savant 2016) is a good example of this. While the action takes unfolds, so does the growing relationship between Koski and Falk, begun in the first of the Koski and Falk Series, WHO'S KILLING ALL THE L...

THRILLERS IN THE NIGHT SKY

Posted by Gary Martine on Saturday, August 27, 2016, In : Quantum Death
I'm often asked from where my inspirations for thriller books come. You might think because I like to write political-techno-thrillers, that it would come from the news, social media (political), my associations with technologically innovative groups (techno), or TV (thrillers). Nope. I'm also a sky-watcher. Call me an occultist, astrologist, alchemist, even an illusionist or

magus if you like, but every clear night I retire after writing to my makeshift living room observatory, where I parse...

WHERE TO START READING KOSKI & FALK THRILLERS

Posted by Gary Martine on Thursday, August 25, 2016, In : Quantum Death
Having joined A. G. Hayes in this fifth Koski & Falk thriller, I have several times been asked if one has to read the others in the series in order to take full pleasure from QUANTUM DEATH (Savant 2016). I'm pleased to say, no. Mr. Hayes' style is such that one can begin with any one adventure and then expand before or after without loss. Still, there is the detail of their "growing" relationship, beginning with WHO'S KILLING ALL THE LAWYERS? (Savant 2011) through QUANTUM DEATH and, I daresay...

CYBERSECURITY/CYBERWAR

Posted by Gary Martine on Sunday, August 14, 2016, In : Quantum Death

Everyone want to feel secure, but is that even possible in the 21st Century? It's barely 2016 and already nations are accusing other nations of digitally interfering with their national affairs including directing elections (see

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/11/us/politics/democratic-party-russia-hack-cyberattack.html?_r=0

for details). It's wise to remember that "feeling" secure is exactly that: a feeling. Reality is a totally different matter. In QUANTUM DEATH (Savant 2016) the conflicting i...

WHAT HAPPENS TO BOOK HEROS AFTER AN ADVENTURE?

Posted by Gary Martine on Sunday, August 14, 2016, In : New Books
Ever wonder what happens to the protagonist-hero's after their book is published? I have. A. G. Hayes and I have been talking about writing a sequel to QUANTUM DEATH (Savant 2016) dealing with what happens to Koski and Falk immediately after the adventure. They are, after all, closer than ever before. Both at the same time are concerned that their work could rob them of their partner at any time, and Falk is still recovering from a gunshot wound. Time, perhaps, for a "vacation." A little time...

THE (DOUBLE-HEADED) EAGLE THAT TWEETED

Posted by Gary Martine on Friday, August 12, 2016, In : Quantum Death
Russia these days is getting bad publicity, perhaps deservedly, but in QUANTUM DEATH (Savant 2016), a politico-techno-thriller, Raymond Gaynor (that's me) and my colleague, multi-award-winning author A. G. Hayes, paint Russia, or at least Russians, in a different light.

Post perestroika, post glasnost, while the USA bristles with frustration over a massive and crippling cyber-attack and looks menacingly towards Russia as the source, in a twist of fate, our "enemy" becomes a much needed "frien...

CAN ONE THING REALLY BE IN TWO PLACES AT THE SAME TIME?

Posted by Gary Martine on Wednesday, August 10, 2016, In : Quantum Death
Okay, so one of the premises of QUANTUM DEATH by A. G. Hayes with Raymond Gaynor (Savant 2016) is that the quantum entanglement phenomenon recently reported in the scientific literature will slowly be expanded to include larger and larger objects, despite my life partner's emphatic reiteration that, "I CAN'T BE IN TWO PLACES AT THE SAME TIME!" To this I agree, tempering my agreement with the words, "for now."

But in QUANTUM DEATH, protagonist Kate Keenan, a brilliant computer scientist worki...

Quantum Death Hits Europe

Posted by Gary Martine on Sunday, August 7, 2016, In : Quantum Death
I was pleased to see that my most recent book, QUANTUM DEATH (Savant 2016), published with multi-award-winning thriller writer A. G. Hayes, has received an Amsterdam Book Festival Award. While set throughout the USA and Pacific including Hawaii, the impact of the technology involved, that of quantum physics and more specifically the quantum singularity, will be of interest to everyone following CERN's new particle Super-Collider and the search for new particle characteristics. The Super-Colli...

QUANTUM DEATH Stalks the World

Posted by Gary Martine on Tuesday, July 26, 2016, In : Quantum Death
With the 2016 release of QUANTUM DEATH (Savant 2016) a techno-thriller I had the pleasure of writing together with multi-award-winning author A. G. Hayes, the world enters a new age of terror.

Goodbye Atomic Age, hello M-Superstring/Multi-verse Age replete with the not-so-imaginary kvantovaya mashina smerti, KMS, or "Quantum Death Machine." Only three Cerebrus agents, the legendary Joe Falk and Susan Koski, along with Kate Keenan, stand between the world and total destruction. The fifth in A....

QUANTUM DEATH AWAITS KOSKI AND FALK

Posted by Gary Martine on Friday, February 12, 2016, In : New Books
I'm so pleased to announce that Raymond Gaynor has just completed a manuscript entitled QUANTUM DEATH with A. G. Hayes for the fifth in his popular Koski and Falk series. It was a joy writing this politico-techno-thriller with multi-award-winning author A. G. Hayes, one I will long cherish. The manuscript was immediately picked up by Savant Books and Publications and has an anticipated release date of mid-2016.

This is my first decidedly non-gay work, Koski and Falk being a legendary female-m...

Love Affair

Posted by Gary Martine on Tuesday, June 2, 2009, In : New Books
A month or so ago, when I was reflecting on my XXXX HOT m/m erotic romance political thriller manuscript entitled Total Meltdown that I had just completed, a sudden thought occurred to me:  I had asked fellow writer William Maltese to write a short cover blurb for another work I had just completed, Kingsley & I Together, and being an admirer of his, sent him the manuscript to read.  One thing led to another and soon William at my invitation had his sleeves rolled up and was licking the sharp ...
