While it's absolutely true that I "live and breath San Francisco," I've a penchant for paradise, and spend a good portion of my life writing on Oahu. Just ask A. G. Hayes or William Maltese, my co-authors on QUANTUM DEATH (Savant 2016) and TOTAL MELTDOWN (Borgo/Wildside 2011) respectively. Living in Hawaii is sort of a Michener tradition, I guess. Michener was an author I "teethed" on, and though he lived for five years on the Northshore Oahu while writing HAWAII, I personally prefer the more urban Honolulu. Honolulu is a microcosm of the planet, especially the Pacific Rim countries and customs. It's my habit to go out for lunch and chat with anyone at the restaurant, staff or guests, about authoring or my latest book; some but not all evenings, I can be found roaming the Beachwalk at Waikiki, or lounging in Hula's, or the Moana Surfrider or Hawaiian Hotel lobby sipping a libation and chatting with anyone who approaches.
Hawaii plays such a role in my life these days, that, like San Francisco, I often include it in my works. For example, the final scene in the deadly series of "event-auctions" in QUANTUM DEATH is set in Hawaii. Having lived here on and off for over 30 years now, I believe I create "Hawaiian situations" with authoritative vividness. The same with San Francisco, where I've lived on and off for over 40 years. That's not to denigrate my time in almost every state of the USA, as well as my foreign travels to Europe, Japan and the former USSR. Whenever I write, I try to draw directly from my experience when framing and describing a location. It's my extensive travels that I return to when writing.
If you're ever in Hawaii, look me up. Ask where I'm at and join me in conversation. Be sure to ask me to sign and dedicate a copy of my latest book. I always have a few copies with me wherever I go.
