Chicken or Egg?

Posted by Gary Martine on Tuesday, April 21, 2020, In : The Edge of Madness: Shadow

Which came first, lack of infrastructure to handle a pandemic like COVID-19, or the COVID-19 pandemic? I can't think of a more cogent question today. Virtually everything today that isn't "working" well is being blamed on COVID-19, and, well, maybe to some extent that's true. COVID-19 is the spark that ignited interest in all the failings of our current infrastructures from politics, to government, economics, transportation, education, social services (my furloughed partner has been waiting f...

A. G. HAYES AND ME

Posted by Gary Martine on Saturday, March 14, 2020, In : The Edge of Madness: Shadow
It has been my good fortune to have worked on QUANTUM DEATH (Savant 2019) with the imminent author of thrillers, A. G. Hayes. In this fifth work in the Koski and Falk Secret Agent Series, Susan Koski and her partner Joe Falk take on their most complex and dangerous case yet: The Quantum Death Machine.

Since then A. G. and I have ended up in almost daily conversations about Koski and Falk, and most recently, his developing five-book Kate Keenan Special Assignment series, the first work being F...

"DIS" MISSED!

Posted by Gary Martine on Saturday, March 14, 2020, In : The Edge of Madness: Shadow
Some years ago, the world seemed on a singular path towards global integration. There were a mess of "new world order" conspiracy theories following in the wake, but, all in all, the science of prediction -- futuring, visioning, superforcasting --consistently described a variety of scenarios that led to a revolution in conscious awareness in humans and domestic animals, a new more humane humanism, ecologically-oriented industry and an exponential increase in worldwide economic efficiency and ...

THE END OF ANOTHER ERA?

Posted by Gary Martine on Friday, March 13, 2020, In : The Edge of Madness: Shadow
Once again, history repeats.

Ushered in by birth control, the 60s through the 70s was the era of “Free Love,” until in the 80s when innocence was lost to the HIV epidemic.

Fast forward to the 00s when Facebook, taking advantage of computers, cell phones and the internet, ushered in a new era: one in which people could establish social connections and physical relationships with others easily anywhere on the planet. Our recently enjoyed era of “Connection” innocence is now being lost to ...

AM I QUANTUM CRAZY OR IS THIS WORLD CHANGED?

Posted by Gary Martine on Wednesday, March 11, 2020, In : The Edge of Madness: Shadow
Talk about quantum strangeness: This is becoming one crazy world!  I recall the world slowly advancing towards global integration and maybe even global consciousness. You know: the little blue marble ripping through our universe dragging its own version of world spacetime with it. Then suddenly. Poof. Something changed.

I've been thinking a lot about this lately as I edit "The Edge of Madness" for Aignos Publishing, the avant garde imprint of Savant Books and Publications, and I think I've fi...

TAKING WRITING TO THE EDGE OF MADNESS

Posted by Gary Martine on Friday, August 9, 2019, In : The Edge of Madness: Shadow
It's my special pleasure to announce that Aignos Publishing, an imprint of Savant Books and Publications, has accepted my newest techno-thriller, "The Edge of Madness: Shadow" for publication. Taking up where TOTAL MELTDOWN by Raymond Gaynor and William Maltese (Borgo/Wildside 2009) left off, NewAmerica, now a shadow of the former United States of America, provides a challenging and dangerous future place for three young firebrands to live -- dystopic science fiction that rings all too true i...

QUANTUM QU-BITS

Posted by Gary Martine on Monday, December 25, 2017, In : Quantum Death

Many would say that a computational "bit" is a single unit of information. It might, however, be more correct to say that a contemporary computational "bit" can represent a single datum, while a combination of bits can represent a single unit of information. For example, consider the number "1" (as opposed to the number "0"). In essence, it represents a numerical datum that can be mathematically manipulated, but doesn't, as such, represent anything beyond that. However, by adding "car," it be...

THE REAL SHARK TANK

Posted by Gary Martine on Monday, December 18, 2017, In : New Books
I rarely watch television, greatly preferring books and their thought-richness to in-my-face entertainment, but the other day while reading an advance copy of Daniel Bradford's outstanding western, BO HENRY AT THREE FORKS (Savant, in press), I noticed out of the corner of my eye ABC's  "The Shark Tank." Humans posing as monetary sharks. The epitome of economic Trumpism, but, in fact, nothing at all like real sharks.

We have plenty of real sharks in Hawaii: sand, white tip, black tip, even tig...

MORE GOBBLTY-GOOK OR SOMETHING FOR WHICH TO BE REALLY THANKFUL?

Posted by Gary Martine on Friday, November 24, 2017, In : Quantum Death
It's Thanksgiving evening, and, stuffed tighter than a Thanksgiving turkey, hot cuppa in hand, I've been sitting back in my comfort chair and counting all the things for which I am this year most thankful. You know all the usual ones, so I skip on to Higher-Dimensional Gravity. Yep, as the co-author with A. G. Hayes of QUANTUM DEATH (Savant 2017), for what could I be more thankful than that? After all, in the story the Quantum Death Machine is a Hitchcock macguffin, a device, largely unexplai...

ANOTHER DAY, ANOTHER RESTAURANT

Posted by Gary Martine on Thursday, November 9, 2017, In : Quantum Death
One of my favorite things to do is to go out to lunch to meet other authors, writers and readers. Today was no exception. My lunch began at Ala Moana Shopping Center. While considering where to lunch, I had to stop at the Apple Store (never pass an Apple store without stopping in, asking a question and learning something new to help publicize my books). Then, on a whim, a reader I met and I when to the nearest Ramen shop. Yum. Now that’s a noon well spent!

A NEXT-DOOR QUANTUM EVENT

Posted by Gary Martine on Tuesday, October 24, 2017, In : Quantum Death
While the word "quantum" often conjures up visions of the dark cosmos or mysterious occurrences not entirely inappropriate this time of year with Halloween looming a week away), things quantum can also be experienced in our real world in real time. Take for instance last night: Honolulu, Hawaii, the land of warm, sunny days and gentle trade winds, experienced it's annual monsoon, separating the hot, humid days of late fall and the cool, sunny days of winter, spring and summer. QUANTUM DINING

ALOHA Everyone! Yes, today's blog is truly about "quantum dining" which, translated, means dining with a copy of QUANTUM DEATH (Savant 2016) by A. G. Hayes with, you guessed it, me, Raymond Gaynor, aka Gary Martine, D. S. Janik and/or Daniel S. Janik. Yum. While waiting, I displayed my newest book and generated some surprising interest. Fir...

Aignos Publishing's New "Screenplay Novel" Genre

Posted by Gary Martine on Sunday, October 8, 2017,
I've been around authoring for some years, but I never thought I'd witness the birth of an entirely new genre - not some small modification by adding an adjective here or adverb there, but an entirely new genre!

I think all of us in the book authoring and publishing world have been wondering if there might be a bridge between youth of today and books. After all, youth today have multi-million-dollar 3-D IMAX movies, YouTube, anime, video games, a veritable cornucopia of visually-directed work...

PROPHETIC, NOTHING LESS

Posted by Gary Martine on Friday, September 1, 2017, In : Quantum Death
When I wrote QUANTUM DEATH (Savant 2017) with A. G. Hayes, I never expected the plot would so quickly transform from techno-political thriller to modern day drama. Take the basic plot: North Korea at the lead, with China watching and cheering, and Russia, dare I say it, coming to the aid of American agents Koski and Falk. Or how about it's cyber-warfare/dark web/The Onion Ring (TOR)-based financing using Bitcoins? And how about the "Quantum Death Machine," originating in Russian and finding i...

Posted by Gary Martine on Saturday, April 15, 2017, In : Quantum Death
It’s been a pretty crazy month, requiring some serious traveling, ultimately taking me away from my writing. Hadn’t planned to end up in Coos Bay, Oregon, but, well, that’s where I found myself for almost a week. It turned out it was just before tourist season and, while sunny in the afternoons, it was foggy, rainy and bitter cold at night and in the early mornings. What I remember most is the trees. Big, full, magnificent evergreens as far as the eye could see. I felt humbled. Some of ...

SUPERMOONING

It's here at last, the previous one in 1948 just after the Second Great War, and the next one scheduled for 2034 (the supermoon, not another Great War), assuming we humans are still present on the Earth to view it. Taking its photo, however, was a bit trickier than I'd imagined.

First, I had trouble catching it rising just above the horizon, as the Koolau Mountains were in the way, meaning that our first view in Honolulu would be at least 45 degrees above horizon, causing Supermoon to optic...

AND THAT'S ALL I HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THE ELECTION...

Posted by Raymond Gaynor on Tuesday, November 8, 2016, In : 2016 USA Elections
I was asked yesterday by a friend who I was going to vote for. An innocuous question, to my surprise, asked in a decidedly acrimonious voice. It was as if whomever I voted for, if it wasn't the same as the person he voted for, our relationship, perhaps even our lifelong friendship would suddenly fall into doubt.

First, like many Americans, I'm sick of the tsunami of pathos, ethos, keiros and personally interpreted numos, and the almost total lack of the only kind of argument that has any trut...

DESPOTS, BREAD AND CIRCUSES

Posted by Raymond Gaynor on Thursday, November 3, 2016, In : Quantum Death

In the past, antagonists in thrillers typically wore black hats and shot everyone, while protagonists wore white (or at least not-black) hats and, when pressured, shot reluctantly back. For many years this demarcation seemed inviolate. Why? The world up to the recent has been one of guns and bullets, where the white hats in one clever way or another stopped the bullets and saved the day.

Today, neither antagonists nor protagonists even wear hats, making them initially indecipherable from each...

WHERE IN THE WORLD...?

Posted by Raymond Gaynor on Thursday, October 27, 2016, In : Quantum Death

The new breed of dictatorial politicians represent more than another adventure for special agents Tripler and Clarke — TOTAL MELTDOWN (Borgo/Wildside 2005) — or Koski and Falk — QUANTUM DEATH (Savant 2016). They represent what's going awry in a world that is increasingly losing its core humanity. In a phrase, that's what's at the very heart of many contemporary thrillers. Not dystopia. Not violence. Not abuse. Not sex, money, power or arrogance. Without what makes humans human -- joy, m...

THE WORLD IN TWO APPLE PIES AND A BEACH PHOTO

Posted by Raymond Gaynor on Sunday, October 2, 2016, In : Quantum Death

In physics (there's that "P" word that often causes young students to shudder), the unending search continues for the "fundamental building blocks" of everything that exists. At present, there are twelve such building blocks called quarks. In an "aha" moment, I experienced the world in two apple pies I handmade last night and a beach photo sitting not far from them.

Quarks come in six "flavors," up, down, top, bottom, strange and charmed. These come in two forms referred to as matter and a...

THRILLERS: PIECE-BY-PIECE OR THE WHOLE MONTY?

Posted by Raymond Gaynor on Saturday, October 1, 2016, In : Quantum Death
Writing a thriller is equal parts conscious and unconscious work. At least, it is for me. And the conscious part, in fact, is often more in retrospect than the writing moment. One of those crossover parts is whether to reveal the plot piece-by-piece or all at once, in either case, relying heavily on invoking the reader's curiosity.

In the classic mystery thriller, the plot is revealed gradually piece-by-piece with the final piece that brings meaning to everything typically withheld to the las...

TIME FOR SOME CELEBRATORY MUSIC AND DANCE

Having successfully begun the launch of QUANTUM DEATH (Savant 2016), I decided it was time to celebrate, and what better way to do so than with music and dance.

The "Fab Four" were visiting Waikiki, and my partner and I decided it was time to meet the Beetles in person (a la live avatars) and re-experience the 60's to present with those iconic musicians, often alluded to as the outstanding musicians of our century. The Fab Four didn't disappoint. It proved more than a stroll down Memory (Penn...

In QUANTUM DEATH (Savant 2016), A. G. Hayes and I introduce the Quantum Death Machine, a theoretical weapon not so much of mass destruction (WMD) as of mass infrastructure interference (WMII). In this new scenario, the objective isn't to destroy an enemy so much as paralyze it, allowing the aggressor to acquire all its resources intact. Our Quantum Death Machine is based on some of the emerging characteristics of theoretical #quantum physics and it's overarching #M-Superstring Theory. in the ...

THE GHOST IN THE BOX

In QUANTUM DEATH (Savant 2016), Cerebrus Agents Koski and Falk are challenged with facing and defeating a kvantovaya mashina smerti or Quantum Death Machine (QDM) being used to bring the United States and all of the Americas to their knees. But is the alleged QDM a simple writer's MacGuffin or is it more substantial? Could it really happen?

I believe the answer is "yes," which, I hope, makes this techno-thriller even more intensely gripping.

A deeper explanation is that the QDM is based on ...

QUANTUM SUICIDE AND THE IMMORTAL CAT

Posted by Gary Martine on Monday, September 19, 2016, In : Quantum Death
Okay, nice celestial diversions, but it's time to get back to exploring the unique box that QUANTUM DEATH (Savant 2016) opened. Enter Schroedinger's Cat, a 1935 thought experiment by physicist Erwin Schroedinger that seemingly produces a quantum paradox, namely that a cat in a sealed box with a device designed to kill the cat at a random point in time, results in the [unobserved] cat being simultaneously alive and dead at any one point in time. In this so-called "Copenhagen interpretation" of...

I'm happy. It's the first time I've mooned Waikiki. Saturn was visible, too, but was unable to resolve the optical disparity between the high power 8mm telescope lens opening and my handheld camera. I'll try again tonight, though clouds appear to be moving in.

THE QUANTUM DEATH MACHINE EXPLAINED

Posted by Gary Martine on Sunday, September 4, 2016, In : Quantum Death
I'm often asked to explain the details of how the kvantovaya mashina smerti, the Quantum Death Machine, in QUANTUM DEATH (Savant 2016) worked. While all of what was disclosed in the book is true, at least to a lesser scale, I must admit to using it as a MacGuffin. For those who haven't heard that term before, a MacGuffin, is some goal, object, or other motivator that the protagonist pursues, usually with little or no narrative explanation, often that is actually not central to the overall act...

THE "GUTS" OF A THRILLER: THE HUMAN OR INHUMANE?

Posted by Gary Martine on Thursday, September 1, 2016, In : Quantum Death
I'm often asked what I think makes up a good thriller. There are lots of ways of approaching that question, but, to me they all seem to boil down to the human or inhumane? That is, conveying the very essence of being human -- emotions -- or the very essence of being not human -- inhumane? I'd like to start with the latter.

You might think the opposite of humanness would be inhumanness, but that's more the purview of fantasy, namely horror or terror. In the world of thrillers it isn't what's i...

The Russian submarine I chose to capture Falk is a Severodvinsk/Yassin-class beauty, the newest fourth generation, nuclear-powered, multipurpose attack submarine. Taking literary license, I called it a Yasmin-Class submarine and named it "Severodvinsk."

When Koski's hover-jet is detected by the submarine, the only thing they could do was run away as fast as possible, as this class is said to be armed with a total of 32 or more sea to air/ground cruise missiles, as well as an array of anti-shi...

SHOULDN'T ALL THRILLERS HAVE A VILLAIN?

Posted by Gary Martine on Wednesday, August 31, 2016, In : Quantum Death
It's said that powering every thriller is "tension" that typically comes from the existence of a protagonist and antagonist. I was taught this by the best, but I've always wondered if an antagonist-villain was really necessary to power a thriller. One thing about QUANTUM DEATH (Savant 2016) that's different than many other thrillers, is that there is no personification of evil, no antagonist-villain per se. In that sense, perhaps, QUANTUM DEATH is more of a mystery by definition. And yet...

QUANTUM STRANGENESS AND OTHER ODDITIES

Posted by Gary Martine on Tuesday, August 30, 2016, In : Quantum Death
A lot of research went into the writing of QUANTUM DEATH (Savant 2016) by A. G. Hayes and, yours truly, Raymond Gaynor. In fact, over two years of in-depth research went into just getting a grasp on what is often called #Quantum Strangeness. In particle physics, "strangeness" is a property of very small particles like quarks and is expressed as a quantum number. These numbers have names as well, like strangeness, charm, topness and bottomness. In a more general sense, however, the physics of ...

Although immersed at the moment in things Japanese, I took a moment to write a short fictitious satire on The Fourth of July based on an experience I had there. I posted it to Frothing Authors and immediately realized it deserved to appear here also:

The Fourth of July is one of the strangest holidays in no-man's-land Hawaii.

On the outside, Hawaii looks very America, USA, thank-you-very-much: American streets, American stop signs and street lights, American police, American English. Well, that...

If It's Sunday It Must Be Japan

Posted by Gary Martine on Sunday, July 5, 2009, In : Hawaiiana
As some of you know, I left Hawaii a few days ago for Japan to completing the background research for my next novel, "The Sword of Kamehameha," set in 1260 feudal Japan and Hawaii. The last couple of days, I've been meeting with traditional Japanese sword-makers, learning about how swords were made in the 1200's. I was surprised to find that traditional Japanese sword-makers can recount the evolution of their techniques back over a thousand years. That means that the Sword of Kamehameha proba...

Closer to The Edge of Madness

Posted by Gary Martine on Saturday, July 4, 2009, In : New Books
There's something about walking a thousand year-old, tree-lined street of feudal Kyoto in the afternoon, then grabbing a bullet train to end the day at 3 a.m. in the glittering neon-crusted night streets of modern Tokyo that is so mind-boggling as to drive one to madness. Which reminds me of "The Edge of Madness" book I'm working on even now as I travel throughout Japan trying to catch a whiff of its flavor, over 800 years ago around the mid-1200's BCE.

Picking up where "Total Meltdown" (Wild...

The Edge of Madness

Posted by Gary Martine on Tuesday, June 30, 2009, In : New Books
OK, enough of that Hawaiiana stuff - Aloha to Paradise, I'm off to Japan to check out sword manufacturing in the 1200's and meet with some master sword makers (that after visiting Seville a while back to check out ancient and modern Spanish sword manufacturing).  Did you know I fenced in college?  I competed in both foil and epee, later participating in saber till I got tired of the welt marks - our version of warrior tatoos.  I'm also looking forward to visiting some of the likely historical...

Coffee Talk Romance GLBT Discussion

Posted by Gary Martine on Saturday, June 6, 2009, In : New Books
Today was Coffee Talk Romance GLBT Discussion day, and I enjoyed posting excerpts from "Kingsley & I" and my newest release, "Kingsley & I Together."  It was a fun discussion, and I hope you will visit and look over the interesting information that was teased from me.  I also talked about "Total Meltdown" a bit, and some more about what I'm doing right now in Hawaii researching my next work tentatively entitled "The Sword of Kamehameha."

This afternoon I'm off to look for the "Birthing Stone...

Love Affair

Posted by Gary Martine on Tuesday, June 2, 2009, In : New Books
A month or so ago, when I was reflecting on my XXXX HOT m/m erotic romance political thriller manuscript entitled Total Meltdown that I had just completed, a sudden thought occurred to me:  I had asked fellow writer William Maltese to write a short cover blurb for another work I had just completed, Kingsley & I Together, and being an admirer of his, sent him the manuscript to read.  One thing led to another and soon William at my invitation had his sleeves rolled up and was licking the sharp ...

The Devil in the Deep Blue Sea

Posted by Gary Martine on Monday, June 1, 2009, In : New Books
Yes, well, starting with a title like that, what can I possibly say that would maintain the drama (thump, thump, thump - that's my and I hope your heartbeat pulsing anxiously and expectantly).  Actually I spent all morning following up on yesterday's trip to Kaimana Beach in Waikiki.  That's across the street from Queen Kapiolani Park.  Instead of working on "The Sword of Kamehameha" yesterday after blogging like I planned, I got engrossed in reading Mark Twain's "Roughing It," and his journa...
